Avoiding Credit Card Debt Is a Difficult FeatEverywhere you turn these days, it seems like there is a new credit card offer. No interest! Low rates! No payments for six months! Just turn on the TV, open the mailbox, check your email, or listen to the radio and you will be sure to see such an offer. Credit card offers are everywhere you look, even in magazines. With the prevalence of such offers comes the increased chance to fall into credit card debt. With so much opportunity out there, how can one avoid the downfall of credit card debt? Simply put, do not apply for every offer that you receive. If you already have one or two cards, throw the offers away! Shred them! If you already have a credit card but have decided it is time for another, always read through the offer carefully to make sure it is right for you. Check out the interest rate and always go for the lowest one. Avoid getting into credit card debt by shopping around for the best rates. Although credit is a privilege that can help us out of many unfortunate financial situations, many people abuse it. The black hole of credit card debt forms when a person abuses his or her credit. Credit cards should not be used as extra income; a common misstep of cardholders that increases the threat of credit card debt. Basically, when you use your credit card, you are borrowing said amount from a creditor that you will need to repay, often plus interest. When possible, credit cards should be reserved for emergency situations, such as a car repair, an emergency flight, or unexpected medical expenses. However, many times, consumers will use their credit cards for large purchases like a new sofa, a vacation, or holiday shopping. It is the frivolous spending that can contribute to credit card debt. If you must use your credit card for a non-essential item or service, always be sure that you are able to pay that balance off in full on or before the billing cycle ends. This way, you will avoid falling prey to credit card debt and not accruing any interest. When you cannot pay the credit card balance in full, your next best step to avoid the pitfalls of credit card debt is to pay as much of the balance off by the next due date. The best possible way to avoid credit card debt is to use a cash only policy. This means that no matter what your plan to purchase you use cash. Either use the old-fashioned cold hard cash or your debit card, which will draw funds directly from your bank account. It is hard to spend what you do not have! Even though credit card offers are everywhere, try to keep a blind eye to them. It is hard to say no to such offers, but in the long run, your wallet will thank you. Remember, avoiding credit card debt by not overspending is in the best interest of your financial future. |
